Birch Plywood – Naturally beautiful, strong and sustainable
An excellent option for those looking for a sustainable resource, as birch trees are abundant and experience little wastage, with almost every part of the tree being used by many industries. Twigs are used to make brooms. Timber is used for furniture and flooring and even the waste and residue is used as boiler fuel for energy production. People used to use even more of the birch tree years ago, with the bark used for roofing and the sap used for making wine!
Birch is a great renewable resource that’s plentiful in the northern hemisphere. Birch trees grow fairly quickly and support different wildlife habitats. When they are managed sustainably they do not interfere with the natural biodiversity.
Birch Plywood grades
For clear finishing
Higher grades
Birch Plywood is graded based on the quality of its face veneers, rather than the appearance and quality of its core.
We provide two higher grades that are making furniture with a clear finishing. Lower grades are better suited for packaging and in structural works.
Grade B/BB
Available in Long grain construction, this is the highest grade available to produce a clear-finishing. There will only be minor natural features, such small pin knots permitted on the ‘B’ Face. ‘B’ grade is generally only available with ‘BB’ Grade reverse.
Grade BB/BB
Available in Long or Cross-grain construction, plywood where both faces are ‘BB’ is primarily a utility-grade, where patches knots and imperfections are permitted. ‘BB’ can be used for all general work where face grade is not particularly important, but higher quality ‘BB’ grade boards can also be used for clear-finishing in furniture.
When appearance is not important
Lower grades
We don’t sell lower grades of Birch Plywood, but you may find the information useful. Despite the more inferior appearance, the core of lower grade plywood is still solid and sound.
Grade BB/CP and BB/WG
Grade BB face with WG or CP reverse. Standard commercial classes that essentially have only one good side — reverse side can have numerous large knots, open splits, defects and discolouration.
Grade CP
Russian Grade — in between BB and WG. Used where good face appearance is not necessary, i.e. packing crates, furniture carcasses.
Grade C
Similar appearance and use as Grade WG — may be un-sanded with open defects and discolouration.
Grade WG
Large knots, patches, open defects, staining and discolouration permitted. Used for packing crates and carcass work or when hidden, such as upholstered furniture.
